Banned from Grindr: how the appeal works, why device bans are different here, and what Grindr’s own rules say

Grindr runs its own appeal desk, keeps a record against your phone as well as your account, and has no group escalation team above it. Here is what its own documents say, and what to send.

Intake first. Payment after. Not taken on = refunded.

The Grindr logo
The short version
✓The channel Grindr names: the ban appeal form behind the banned login, a 1,000-character box and one file. If that login fails, Grindr’s help centre request page also lists “I want to appeal a ban”. No deadline in the Terms.
✓Grindr’s 2025 report, on appeals against account bans: 840,723 filed and 91,795 reversed, at a median of 281 hours.
✓Not Match Group: no escalation desk, and no certified EU dispute body names Grindr.
✓Grindr keeps a device identifier and account information for banned devices and flags image reuse across accounts. A new phone is worse advice here than anywhere.
Your appeal letter, written for your ban. Free.

Two quick answers and an address. We email you a letter built for what happened, with the facts only you can find marked, and where to find each one.

We send it now, then check in a few times over the next week to see how it went. One click stops that.

If Grindr has banned you, the appeal is a web form, not an email. You log in to the banned account, confirm you have read the Guidelines, and write up to 1,000 characters with one attachment for a moderator who was not part of the first decision. Grindr publishes no deadline and no bar on a second try, but it closes appeals without a decision for non-response or duplication, and its 2025 transparency report gives a median wait of 281 hours. There is no desk above the form, because Grindr is not a Match Group company, and no certified EU dispute body lists Grindr. The short version is on our Grindr route page; the free check sorts out what the screen is.

What Grindr’s Terms and Guidelines say about bans

The Terms of Service, effective 6 July 2026, are a contract with Grindr LLC. They let Grindr suspend or terminate any account for a breach “or for any other reason”, without prior notice. The appeal clause is one sentence: “If You believe that Grindr has suspended or terminated Your User Account in error, You may contact Us at help@grindr.com at any time.” The Community Guidelines, as published on 16 September 2026, put warnings and content removal “as a first response” and permanent bans for “severe violations or repeated offenses”, except that “suspected underage accounts are banned immediately”.

The help page How Grindr moderates content and profiles, updated 16 September 2026, adds that “profiles may be automatically banned immediately” by machine review, and that Grindr “may also take action to prevent future profiles from being created”. Its 2025 report adds: a first violation “typically” gets a warning or temporary suspension, and “a repeat violation escalates to a permanent account-level ban”.

One appeal is yours to send. The routes outside the app, we file.

We work out which routes are actually open to you, write the appeal where the app gives you a box for one, and file the routes outside the app in your name, the first inside 48 hours. We never ask for your password. Intake first, payment after.

How the Grindr appeal works and what it asks for

The channel is the ban appeal form at web.grindr.com/ban-appeal, whose last step, “Tell Us What Happened”, takes name, email, subject, a description capped at 1,000 characters and one optional attachment. The moderation page says a “specially trained team member who was not involved in the initial decision” reviews it, and that it “may not be able to share with you the full reason for a ban” where that would reveal a reporter. It requires “all ban appeals to be submitted through this form”, so the email in the Terms gets redirected. Whether any app takes an appeal by email or phone is compared in email or phone number to appeal a dating app ban.

The form opens only behind the banned login, so nobody can file it for you: we draft it, you paste and submit. In order: the decision and the reason shown, the facts by date, the rule you did not break, what the attachment shows, the ask. How to write an appeal that gets read covers the craft.

How long it takes: Grindr’s 2025 numbers

Grindr publishes its appeal figures as a spreadsheet on its Digital Services Act transparency page, dated 27 February 2026 and covering February to December 2025. On complaints against a decision to suspend or terminate an account it records 840,723 filed and 91,795 reversed. Appeals closed without a decision are, in Grindr’s words, tickets “auto-closed after a period of user non-response, or manually closed by moderators due to duplicate appeals”. That is a reversal rate of 10.9 per cent of everything filed. The median time to a decision was 281 hours, and Grindr notes the fourth-quarter median “dropped to 46 hours” after extra staffing. So do not refile on day three, and answer any reply the day it arrives: duplication and non-response are the two named reasons an appeal is closed unread.

Not Match Group: no escalation desk, no Article 21 body

Grindr is owned by Grindr Inc., a public company on the New York Stock Exchange, and the contract is with Grindr LLC. It shares nothing with Tinder, Hinge or OkCupid, so the Match Group escalation desk, the written route above support, does not exist for it. On Grindr the second look is the appeal reviewer, and nobody sits above them.

The EU route is thin here too. Article 21 of the Digital Services Act lets an EU resident take a decision to a certified out-of-court body. The European Commission’s register, updated 11 September 2026, lists eleven. Three name dating apps: Platform Control in Germany names Tinder, Hinge and OkCupid, ADR Center in Italy adds Bumble and Badoo on its own intake form, and ADR Point in Greece names Bumble, Hinge and Tinder. None names Grindr. A few, in Hungary, Slovakia and Austria, describe a general scope and name no platform, but Grindr’s 2025 report records zero such disputes. Grindr’s own out-of-court disputes page, updated 21 May 2026, says an EU user “may be able to refer the matter” to such a body and that “Grindr will engage in good faith”, though the same page still says no body has been certified, which the register contradicts. So Grindr has not closed the door; what is missing is a body with a record of taking its cases. Our Article 21 guide tracks the register.

Why a new phone is worse advice on Grindr

The reset sounds most plausible on Grindr because its Age Assurance page, updated 16 September 2026, says the age check uses no “facial recognition, biometric matching, or identity verification”. The Privacy Policy, last updated 6 July 2026, says otherwise: Grindr “may retain some account information, a device identifier (i.e., IDFV and Android ID), and limited log information associated with accounts or devices that have been banned”. The 2025 report names the machinery: Sift Science “provides behavioural and device-level fraud scoring”, and Grindr’s Sentinel engine flags “image reuse across accounts”.

So the record is a device identifier, account information, log data and your images, and a new phone answers only the first. Bring the same photos, email or store account and you are the same person to the system. If caught, a first-tier suspension becomes a repeat violation, which escalates to a permanent account-level ban, and the appeal behind the old login is gone. Our guides on device bans and why the reset is dying cover the wider mechanism. What Grindr’s own report says about device-level terminations is in Grindr device ban: does Grindr ban your phone.

Age checks and photos: the triggers people miss

Grindr’s Age Assurance, run by FaceTec, estimates from a short video selfie whether you appear over 18. It is mandatory in the UK, Australia and Brazil, and can be triggered anywhere by “user reports or platform safety systems”. If the system cannot confirm you appear over 18, “your account may be restricted or removed”, and you request a review “by selecting Appeal on your ban screen”. The fallback is the Confirming your age form, updated 16 September 2026: photos of you holding a paper with your account email or device ID and a government ID showing your date of birth, plus a screenshot of the ban.

The Guidelines prohibit pornographic acts, exposed genitals, bodily fluids and women’s nipples on profiles. The Profile photos page, updated 16 September 2026, says a new photo “typically takes the team 20 - 45 minutes” to moderate. A profile reported for impersonation is suspended until you pass the identity check, a selfie holding a paper with your email or device ID.

Not sure any of this applies to you?

The case check is free and takes two minutes. It tells you which routes are open on your ban, including the cases where it tells you not to pay anyone.

If the app itself is a risk where you live

Grindr’s Safety tips, updated 16 September 2026, say “there are countries where being LGBTQ+ is a crime and where authorities use apps and social networks to identify and arrest individuals”. If that is you, the ban is not the most important thing on the table. Every route here creates a record: the appeal takes your name and email, the age route takes photos of you holding a government ID. Decide what you are willing to have on file, and who can read that inbox, first. The Age Assurance page calls the ID route “entirely optional”, so if an ID photo is unsafe, say so in the appeal box and ask for another method. Do not use a VPN to get back in: it does nothing to the retained device identifier, and Grindr’s own censored countries page, updated 15 September 2026, tells you to check local law on VPN use. Nobody should pay us to argue a case that puts them in a police file.

XTRA and Unlimited: getting money back

XTRA and Unlimited are charged through the App Store or Google Play, and Grindr’s Refund policy, updated 15 September 2026, calls all purchases “final and any charges are non-refundable”. The same page names the doors: Apple refunds go through Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com, and for Google Play Grindr is “occasionally able to assist”. The Terms cut the other way: if Grindr terminates a paid account it “will give a pro-rata refund for any amounts pre-paid, but unused”, unless the termination is for a breach. EU and UK buyers also have 14 days from purchase to cancel for any reason. Cancel the renewal first, because deleting the app does not. Never a chargeback: it disputes the store’s charge, not Grindr’s decision, and risks the store account. The order is in the money-back guide.

The access request: EU, UK and California

The Privacy Policy gives privacy@grindr.com and a web form for rights requests, and names EDPO as its EU and UK representative. Under GDPR and UK GDPR the answer is due in one month, extendable by two; under the CCPA a Californian gets 45 days. Grindr’s data page, updated 16 September 2026, confirms a banned user can still get the report through support after identity verification. Ask for the enforcement record, the category of each report, the device identifiers held and any accounts linked to them. Never erasure first: it leaves the ban record and removes your evidence and login, as the erasure versus access guide explains.

What not to do, and what we cannot promise

What we cannot promise is the outcome: Grindr reversed 10.9 per cent of the account-ban appeals filed in 2025, and nobody outside Grindr can move that. What we do is the work: the appeal text drafted for your facts, which you submit from your own login, and the access request sent in your name, the first filing within 48 hours of us having everything we need and copied to you as it goes. The Case is $149 and The Advocate $349. Chasing money taken after the ban is included.

Questions people actually ask

Can you get unbanned from Grindr?

Sometimes. Grindr’s 2025 transparency report gives 840,723 account-ban appeals filed and 91,795 reversed, 10.9%, at a median of 281 hours; the fourth-quarter median fell to 46 hours. The appeal is a web form behind the banned login, and nobody can promise the outcome, including us.

Are Grindr bans permanent?

A permanent ban is the sanction for severe or repeated violations. Grindr’s Community Guidelines, as published on 16 September 2026, put warnings and content removal “as a first response” and permanent bans for “severe violations or repeated offenses”, except that “suspected underage accounts are banned immediately”. Its 2025 report says a first violation “typically” gets a warning or temporary suspension and “a repeat violation escalates to a permanent account-level ban”. Grindr publishes no deadline for appealing either.

What happens if my Grindr account is banned?

You lose the account, and Grindr keeps a record against your phone as well as the account: a device identifier and account information for banned devices, with image reuse across accounts flagged. The appeal is a web form behind the banned login, up to 1,000 characters and one attachment, read by a moderator who was not part of the first decision.

Does Grindr ban your IP?

What Grindr’s documents describe is a device identifier and account information, plus flagging of image reuse across accounts. Nothing we have read from Grindr describes an IP ban. A new phone is worse advice here than anywhere, because the record sits against the device as well as the account.

How do I appeal a Grindr ban?

Log in to the banned account at Grindr’s ban appeal form and fill in “Tell Us What Happened”: name, email, subject, up to 1,000 characters and one attachment. A moderator not involved in the first decision reviews it, emails are redirected to the form, and duplicates are closed unread.

Why can’t I appeal my Grindr ban?

Usually because the form Grindr links, web.grindr.com/ban-appeal, starts from the banned login, and the login is what failed. Grindr’s help centre has a second door: its Submit a request page lists “I want to appeal a ban”, a ticket that asks for the email on the account, your profile ID if you have it, your device, a short subject and what happened, with screenshots, and has you confirm each Community Guideline in turn, as the page stood on 18 August 2026. Grindr’s moderation page says an appeal sent any other way gets a request to use the ban appeal form, so use the ticket once, say in its first line that the ban appeal form will not let you in and why, and keep the ticket email. If the ban came from the age check, Grindr says to select Appeal on the ban screen, and the Confirming your age form is the fallback. If you filed and heard nothing, do not refile: Grindr closes duplicates, its 2025 median was 281 hours, and the other reason it gives for closing an appeal without a decision is not answering when it writes back, so watch that inbox, spam folder included.

How long does a Grindr ban appeal take?

Grindr’s 2025 transparency report, published 27 February 2026, gives a median of 281 hours to a decision, falling to 46 hours in the fourth quarter after extra staffing. Do not refile while you wait, and answer any reply at once.

Does Grindr ban your device or just the account?

Both can be on file. Grindr’s Privacy Policy of 6 July 2026 says it may retain account information, a device identifier (IDFV and Android ID) and log information for banned accounts or devices, and its 2025 report names device-level fraud scoring and image-reuse detection.

Can I make a new Grindr account after being banned?

The Terms do not name a new account, but they bar you from trying to “remove, circumvent, disable, damage or otherwise interfere with” any “features that enforce limitations on use of the Grindr Services”, and Grindr’s moderation page says it “may also take action to prevent future profiles from being created”. The machinery is built to find the new profile. If found, Grindr’s graduated framework treats it as a repeat violation, which escalates to a permanent account-level ban, and the original appeal only opens behind the original login.

Why was I banned from Grindr for no reason?

Grindr says bans can happen “automatically” and “immediately” from machine review, and that it may withhold the full reason where it would reveal a reporter. Its 2025 report says the reason is shown on the Account Banned screen, so read it: a report, an age-estimate failure, a photo rule and an impersonation report each need a different appeal.

Grindr banned me for being underage but I am over 18. What do I do?

Grindr’s Age Assurance page says estimation “may occasionally produce incorrect results” and that you request a review by selecting Appeal on the ban screen. If that fails, the Confirming your age form takes photos of you holding a paper with your account email or device ID and a government ID showing your date of birth.

Is Grindr part of Match Group, and can I escalate a Grindr ban?

No. Grindr belongs to Grindr Inc., a separate public company, so the Match Group escalation desk does not exist for it and a Grindr ban does not reach Tinder or Hinge. After a refusal the routes are the access request, the money, your data regulator, and in the United States a Better Business Bureau or state attorney general complaint.

Can I email Grindr about a ban instead of using the form?

Grindr publishes two answers. Its Terms of Service, effective 6 July 2026, say that if you believe your account was suspended or terminated in error you may contact help@grindr.com. Its page How Grindr moderates content and profiles, updated 3 October 2026, says “We do require all ban appeals to be submitted through this form” and that an emailed appeal is redirected to it. Use the form; an email is a second route that Grindr itself says it will send back.

What does Grindr do before it bans an account?

Its moderation page says it may “give warnings, remove unwelcome content in the app, and/or issue a temporary suspension before issuing a profile ban” and calls banning “a last resort”. It also says profiles “may be automatically banned immediately after violating our rules”, and that it “may also take action to prevent future profiles from being created”. If it suspects you are under 18 it blocks access and asks for ID; for suspected fake photos or impersonation it asks for photo verification.
