The Fair Ban Index

A ban with no explanation is stressful, and you do not have to work it out alone. Most dating apps do not promise to tell you why. Here is what all 24 promise a banned user, ranked on facts anyone can check, and what we do about the gaps.

Why this score

5 is given only where the ban or termination terms themselves point to a refund route, as Hinge's banned-account article does. “Appeals are reviewed by an eharmony agent to assess whether the enforcement action should be upheld or modified, based on the information available at the time of review.”

UK Community Guidelines s.2.2 (Updated on July 15, 2026). The same sentence is in the US Guidelines (saved copy, dated March 5, 2026).

“In enforcing these Community Guidelines, we rely on a combination of manual and automated review.”

Refund on termination

10/15

UK terms promise a refund of the unused Premium Membership even when eharmony terminates for misuse (less a cost deduction); the US and Australia terms make fees non-refundable when access is suspended for breach.

“If we decide to terminate your subscription because you have misused the Service, we will refund to you any payment that you have already made to us for any unused portion of the Premium Membership that we have not provided.”

UK General Terms and Conditions cl. 7.9

“However, we may still also deduct from this refund or charge you a reasonable amount as compensation for any costs we incur as a result of your non-compliance with these terms.”

Billing stops

No document says billing stops when eharmony ends the account; UK terms keep payment obligations in place after termination and store subscriptions must be cancelled with Apple or Google.

“Any applicable payment obligations (either from the Premium Membership or with respect to virtual goods) remain in place notwithstanding termination of your Premium Membership.”

UK General Terms and Conditions cl. 5.2 (about termination by the member; nothing equivalent is said for termination by eharmony)

What this means if you have been banned

Six facts from the apps’ own documents, and what we do about each one.

59,857

bans reversed on appeal in 2025

Nine of these apps reported reversing at least 59,857 account bans after an appeal. Hinge alone reversed 31,251, and Tinder 12,058.

What we do. A rate is an average across everyone who appealed. Your appeal is judged on your facts, so we build it around them. We never promise an outcome.

18 of 24

do not promise to tell you why

Only 6 publish wording that a reason, or the policy breached, is given or shown. 11 say it may be withheld or promise notice only, and 7 promise nothing.

What we do. We file an access request in your name, which asks the app to show what the decision was based on, so your appeal answers what they actually decided.

Tinder's help page describes the appeal as "Begin appeal", then "Submit appeal", and lists no field or upload. 12 of 24 apps do give you a box to answer in.

What we do. We go through your case card with you before you press send, and file the routes outside the app, where you can say everything, in your name.

Grindr and Feeld refund only if they close your account without blaming you. eharmony's UK terms refund even after misuse, less its costs. Hinge and Zoosk point to a store or statutory route.

How we support you

We have read what all 24 apps publish about banned users, and checked every quote. That is what your appeal is built on, not guesses from forums. Here is what happens when you get in touch.

  1. 1
    Tell us what happened

The free check takes two minutes and needs no card. If you want us on it, the intake takes about ten minutes. You confirm the facts; we write the words.

  2. 2
    A person reads it

Payment comes at the end of the intake, and a person reads your answers the same day. If something is missing or does not add up, we ask before anything is written.

  3. 3
    We prepare every route

The in-app appeal, the escalation desk, the data request, the EU referee where one applies, and the money. The first filing goes out within 48 hours of us having what we need, and you are copied the moment each one goes.

  4. 4
    We stay with you

Follow every route on your case page, no password. Every reply from the app is explained in plain English, and you keep the full paper trail.

Worries we hear most
I do not even know why I was banned.

Most apps do not promise to say, so you are in the majority. “No reason given” is standard, not personal, and it does not close any route. A data request makes the app disclose what it holds on you.

I am embarrassed about what happened.

We do not judge. You confirm the facts and we write the words. We decline only a small set of cases (real harassment, threats, violence, anything involving minors) and say so at intake, with a full refund.

I have already appealed and they said no.

Tell us at the start. It changes what we do, and there are often still routes outside the app: the escalation desk, a data request and, for EU residents, a certified dispute body.

I am scared I will make it worse.

The first thing we send you is a short list of what to stop doing. Most ruined appeals are ruined on day one, in anger, at 2am.

Do I have to give you my password?

Never. We do not need it and would not accept it. Where an app takes the appeal only from your own login, we write the words and walk you through sending them.

What if it does not work?

Nobody can honestly promise it. What we promise is the work: every route your case has, the first filing within 48 hours of us having what we need or you can ask for your money back (refund policy), and a plain-English note on every reply. If we do not take your case, you are refunded.

Tinder bans and the record of them

Tinder reported 2,169,598 account terminations for 2025. The EU database holds 59,187 statements coded as an account termination for the same year: 2.7%. It also holds 1,858,046 Tinder statements of all kinds; the database does not show how many of those relate to bans.

What we do. Where the record is thin, we ask the app for yours: your statement of reasons and your data file, in your name.

See the statement gap
16 April

The last account-coded statement from five Match Group brands

In the Commission's files, published to 31 May 2026, the newest statement coded as an account termination from Tinder, Hinge, OkCupid, Meetic and Plenty of Fish is dated 16 April 2026. Tinder, Meetic, OkCupid and Plenty of Fish kept filing other statements after that date; Hinge filed none. We do not know why. The like-for-like counts and the method are in five Match Group brands stopped filing account bans.

What we do. If your ban is after that date, you will not find it in the public database. We ask the app for it directly.

How we counted
13 of 24

have no statement coded as an account ban for 2025

11 never appear in the EU database under their own name. BLK is listed and filed none for 2025, and happn filed 775,274 statements of other kinds, none coded that way. The Act exempts micro and small companies from filing, so some gaps are lawful. Facebook Dating is filed inside "Facebook" and cannot be separated, so it is not counted.

Bumble, Badoo and happn are plotted on the line each files for complaints about account decisions. Hily prints one pooled figure that includes reporters' appeals, so its rate is a floor. Grindr's report covers 1 February to 31 December 2025 and says its figures are global; it was read on 3 September. happn adds its two 2025 half-year filings. Meetic is shown for reference, not scored. Figures are as each company reports them, and a rate is an average: your appeal is judged on your facts.

Filed means submitted to the database during 2025 and coded as an account suspension or termination. An app can file many other statements: Tinder filed 1.86 million in 2025 and happn 775,274, almost all coded as other actions. Article 17(2) of the Digital Services Act exempts "deceptive high-volume commercial content", so a share of bot bans may lawfully have no statement; the Act does not say how large that share is. A statement filed is a separate duty from the notice sent to the user. Meetic is shown for reference, not scored.

How the score works

Nine measures, four pillars, 100 points. Every measure comes from one of three places: the app’s own published terms and help pages, the transparency report the app filed under the EU Digital Services Act, or the Commission’s public Transparency Database. Nothing comes from users, journalists or surveys. Levels are our reading of the documents: where a call sat between two levels we took the lower, and each row shows the quotes behind it and, where a document cuts the other way, that quote too. Where an app publishes nothing, the measure scores zero and is marked as silent, and you can switch that off with "Only count what apps publish". A measure that cannot apply (a free app has no refund) or that we could not assess leaves that app’s denominator, and its row says so.

Told why

25 of 100 points. Does the app say why, and can you find the record?

Written reasons up to 15

Does the app promise, in its own words, to tell a banned user in writing which rule they broke?

  • 15: The notice states the rule and the facts relied on
  • 10: The rule or category is named
  • 5: Notice only, or reasons may be withheld
  • 0: No promise

Statements on record up to 10

For every account suspension or termination the app reported for 2025, how many statements coded as an account suspension or termination did it file in the EU database?

  • 10: 50% or more of the account decisions it reported
  • 0 to 10: In proportion: 10 x (share filed / 50%). Half is treated as full marks because the Act lawfully exempts some bans from a statement
  • 0.5: Files some, but publishes no total to compare with
  • 0: None coded as an account suspension or termination in 2025

Heard

25 of 100 points. Can you answer, and does a person read it?

A box to answer in up to 10

Can the banned person type their side of it, and attach evidence?

  • 10: Free-text field on the appeal
  • 5: Only via a generic support form or email, or optional or partial
  • 0: Button-only, or no published appeal route

A person reads it up to 15

Does the app say a person, not only a machine, decides the appeal?

  • 15: Published statement of human review
  • 8: "Our team will review", with no statement that a person does
  • 0: Silent

Fixed

30 of 100 points. Do appeals win, how fast, and is there a referee above the app?

Reversal rate up to 12

What share of account-ban appeals did the app itself report reversing?

  • 0 to 12: 12 x (share reversed / 50%), capped at 12
  • 0: Not published

Speed up to 8

What is the median time the app reports taking to decide an appeal?

  • 8: 6 hours or less
  • 7: Up to 24 hours
  • 5: Up to 72 hours
  • 3: Up to 7 days
  • 1: Longer
  • 0: Not published; a promised time earns half the band

EU referee up to 10

How many certified EU out-of-court bodies name the app as one they will hear?

  • up to 10: 4 per body naming the app, plus 2 if the Commission register names it
  • 0: No certified body names it

Money

20 of 100 points. What happens to what you paid?

Refund on termination up to 15

If the app ends your account, do its terms give back unused prepaid money?

  • 15: Pro-rata refund, even where the user broke the rules
  • 10: Pro-rata refund unless the user broke the rules
  • 5: No contractual refund, but a statutory, cooling-off or store route is named, or a refund is discretionary
  • 0: Expressly none, or silent

Billing stops up to 5

When the app ends your account, does the billing stop by itself?

  • 5: Terms or help centre say the subscription ends or no further charges follow
  • 0: You must cancel separately, or it says nothing

Reading it fairly

Your ban is not an average. A reversal rate is a history across everyone who appealed. It shows which doors have opened, not what your appeal will do, which depends on your facts. That is why we build each case around them.

It reports; it does not accuse. Every score is what a document says or a filing shows. Some gaps are lawful, and the Index does not say otherwise.

It rewards publishing. Reversal rate, speed and statements on record are worth 30 of the 100 points and can only be earned by apps that publish EU figures or file in the database. Smaller companies are exempt from parts of the Act, so a low score can be a matter of size. The “Only count what apps publish” switch shows the ranking without that effect.

It is dated. Documents were read between 28 August and 30 September 2026, and rows read from a saved copy say so. Scores within two points are effectively tied. The Index is refreshed when a new transparency report lands, and any change is logged below.

Where the numbers come from

Appeal outcomes and decision times: Match Group’s 2025 EU transparency workbooks (Tinder, Hinge, OkCupid, Plenty of Fish, The League, BLK, Meetic; Plenty of Fish is the corrected file Match Group re-issued on 11 June 2026, which says its enforcement data had been understated), the 2026 reports of Bumble and Badoo (Annex I spreadsheets, account line), happn’s 2025 half-year workbooks added together, Hily’s 2025 report (one pooled figure), and Grindr’s 2025 report, read on 3 September. Coffee Meets Bagel’s Australian report is shown but not scored. Account decisions reported: the same filings. Statements filed: the Commission’s Transparency Database aggregate files, counting statements coded as an account suspension or termination and submitted in calendar 2025 under the platform name the database lists. EU referees: the Commission’s register of certified out-of-court bodies and each body’s own scope or intake page. Everything else is a quote, with its link, inside the app’s row; rows read from an archive or cache are marked.

Questions people ask about the Index

Do appeals actually win?

Yes. In 2025, nine of these apps reported reversing at least 59,857 account bans after an appeal, and Hinge alone reversed 31,251. How often an app reverses varies a lot from app to app, and a rate is an average across everyone who appealed, which is why the route you take and how your own appeal is built matter. We never promise an outcome.

Who will I be talking to?

The AppealMyBan case desk. There is one inbox, hello@appealmyban.com, and a person reads it. You can write before you pay anything, and the free check needs no card.

What if my app scores badly?

A low score means the app gives you less to work with, so the route matters more, not that you are stuck. The free check shows which routes are open on your ban, and where a route sits outside the app we file it in your name.

How is the score worked out?

Nine measures add up to 100 points, in four pillars: Told why (25), Heard (25), Fixed (30) and Money (20). Each measure has fixed levels, written out under "How the score works" below, and every level is backed by a quote from the app's own page or a number from its own filing. Use the presets or the sliders and the ranking reorders on the spot.

Why can I not find my app's numbers?

Only larger companies must publish appeal figures under the EU Digital Services Act, and it covers EU users. Where an app publishes nothing, we work from its own terms and help pages, which are quoted in every row, so you are not guessing. Switch on "Only count what apps publish" to see the ranking on published facts alone.

What is a statement of reasons?

Article 17 of the Digital Services Act requires a platform to give a user a clear statement of reasons when it ends an account, and Article 24(5) requires a copy to be sent to the Commission's public database. Where the copy is missing, the only record of your ban is the one you ask for. We ask for it in your name.

Can an app pay to change its rank?

No. Every score is taken from a public document, every quote links to the page it came from, and rows read from a saved copy say so. We take no money from any app. Any app can send a correction with a link to its own published document; we check it and log the change on this page.

Does the Index say any app broke the law?

No. It records what each app publishes and files. Some gaps are lawful: the Act exempts some categories from a statement of reasons and exempts micro and small enterprises from parts of its reporting. The Index reports the fact and leaves the legal question to regulators and courts.

Why does a ban-appeal company publish this?

Because we read these documents every day for people who have been banned, and the answers should be public. Every measure is checkable by anyone, the weights are yours to change, the data is free to download, and the method is on the page.

You do not have to work this out alone.

The free check takes two minutes and tells you which routes are open on your ban, including when it says not to pay anyone. Or write to hello@appealmyban.com: a person reads every message.
