Grindr device ban: does Grindr ban your phone?

For the most serious violations, yes: Grindr’s own 2025 EU report says its enforcement includes “account termination at the device level”. For every other ban it keeps a device identifier against banned accounts and devices. A new phone changes one link in a longer record.

The short version
✓Grindr’s 2025 DSA workbook says its primary enforcement includes “content removal and account termination at the device level for the most serious violations”.
✓Its Privacy Policy, last updated 6 July 2026, says it may retain “a device identifier (i.e., IDFV and Android ID)” and limited log information “associated with accounts or devices that have been banned”.
✓The device is one link. Grindr also names account information, image reuse across accounts, behavioural and device-level fraud scoring, and sign-up checks.
✓Grindr’s 2025 figures: 840,723 appeals against account bans, 91,795 reversed (10.9%), median 281 hours, and 46 hours in the last quarter.
✓Grindr publishes no end date for a ban or for the retained record. The appeal is the form at web.grindr.com/ban-appeal, and Grindr says an emailed appeal is redirected to it.

Yes, for the most serious violations. Grindr’s 2025 EU transparency workbook, published on 28 February 2026, says its “primary enforcement actions include content removal and account termination at the device level for the most serious violations”. For every other ban, Grindr’s Privacy Policy says it may retain “a device identifier (i.e., IDFV and Android ID)” against accounts or devices that have been banned. AppealMyBan handles exactly this: we write the ban appeal you send and file what a third party may file in your name, including the access request that shows the record Grindr holds. The tiers are on the pricing page.

The appeal form, the wait and the money questions are in how a Grindr ban appeal works, and the wider mechanism for the other apps in can Tinder ban your device. This page answers one question: what Grindr says it keeps against your phone.

What Grindr says about banning a device

Grindr’s own pages never use the words “device ban” in a heading, but they say it in three places. The first is the 2025 transparency workbook that Grindr attaches to its EU Digital Services Act transparency reports page (the file was added on 28 February 2026, covers 1 February to 31 December 2025, and we read it on 3 October 2026): “Primary enforcement actions include content removal and account termination at the device level for the most serious violations.” In the same paragraph the workbook lists what its automated tools look for: spam and fraud, sexual solicitation, drug solicitation, hate speech, child sexual abuse material and underage access.

The second is the Privacy Policy, last updated 6 July 2026: “Grindr may retain some account information, a device identifier (i.e., IDFV and Android ID), and limited log information associated with accounts or devices that have been banned or found to violate the Grindr Terms and Conditions of Service or Community Guidelines”. The third is Grindr’s page How Grindr moderates content and profiles, updated 3 October 2026: “We may also take action to prevent future profiles from being created.”

Read together, the three say the same thing at different strengths. A device-level termination is reserved for the most serious violations. A record against the device is kept for banned accounts and devices generally. And Grindr acts to stop future profiles, which is the purpose of keeping the record.

One appeal is yours to send. The routes outside the app, we file.

We work out which routes are actually open to you, write the appeal where the app gives you a box for one, and file the routes outside the app in your name, the first inside 48 hours. We never ask for your password. Intake first, payment after.

What the retained identifier is

IDFV and Android ID are the two names in the Privacy Policy, and neither is your phone number. Apple’s documentation describes the iOS one, the identifier for vendor, as “an alphanumeric string that uniquely identifies a device to the app’s vendor”: the value is “the same for apps that come from the same vendor running on the same device”, and different on a different device. Android’s documentation describes its Android ID, on Android 8.0 and higher, as “a 64-bit number (expressed as a hexadecimal string), unique to each combination of app-signing key, user, and device”.

So the identifier is a label Grindr can read for the phone you used, which is why a device-level termination is possible at all. Grindr does not say how long it keeps the label for a banned device. The same policy says it keeps the two identifiers and limited log data “for a period of up to two years following account deletion” for reporting and statistics, which is a different record for a different purpose.

The rest of the record

The identifier is one link. Grindr’s workbook, in its description of how automated moderation works, names the others in its own words.

Link in the recordWhat Grindr saysWhere
Account information“may retain some account information”Privacy Policy, 6 July 2026

Behaviour and device scoringSift Science provides “behavioural and device-level fraud scoring”2025 DSA workbook
Sign-up and network checksGoogle reCAPTCHA at account creation; Cloudflare “network-level bot and anomaly detection”2025 DSA workbook

Nothing Grindr has published describes an IP ban. What it describes is a device identifier, account information, flagged image reuse, behavioural scoring and checks at sign-up. That is why the question “will a new phone work” has a split answer: a new phone carries a different identifier, and it does nothing to your photos, your email, your behaviour or the decision you are appealing.

Why a new phone is the wrong fix

We do not advise a new account, a new phone, a number change or a VPN, because each one adds a second problem to the first. Grindr’s Terms of Service forbid you to “remove, circumvent, disable, damage or otherwise interfere with” the “features that enforce limitations on use of the Grindr Services”. Its Community Guidelines say that “in the case of severe violations or repeated offenses, we take more serious measures, such as permanent bans”. A caught second account is a repeat violation on the same record, and the appeal that was open on the first account is lost with its login.

What Grindr’s own figures say about getting a ban reversed

Grindr publishes the numbers for appeals against account bans in the same workbook. They are global, not EU-only, a point Grindr states itself, and they cover 1 February to 31 December 2025.

App, 2025Account-ban appealsReversed
Grindr840,72391,795 (10.9%)
Hinge86,65031,251 (36.1%)
Bumble26,3182,419 (9.2%)

Grindr’s median time to a decision on all appeals was 281 hours, about 12 days, and its note says the median in the fourth quarter fell to 46 hours after extra staffing. It also says 64,331 of the account-ban appeals were still open on 31 December 2025. Each app counts in its own way, so read the table as three different floors, not a league. The one fact that carries over is the one you act on: on Grindr about one account-ban appeal in nine was reversed, so the appeal has to answer the exact ground.

How to appeal when a device is involved

Grindr names one channel. Its moderation page says “We do require all ban appeals to be submitted through this form”, at web.grindr.com/ban-appeal, and that if you email or use another form it will ask you to use the ban appeal form (the other apps are compared in email or phone number to appeal a dating app ban). The appeal is reviewed by “a specially trained team member who was not involved in the initial decision”. Grindr adds that it “may not be able to share with you the full reason for a ban”, because reports may reveal who made them.

For a device-level ban the useful writing is the same as for any ban, done carefully. Say which device and which account you mean. Answer the ground the notice gives, and do not guess one. If the notice gives nothing, ask Grindr for your data through its personal-data page and ask specifically for the enforcement record and the device identifiers it holds; Grindr’s page says a banned user can still get the report: contact support, and it will verify your identity and send the information stored on its servers. We advise against asking for erasure first, because Grindr’s Privacy Policy says it may keep account information and the device identifier for banned accounts anyway, while erasure can remove your login and your evidence.

The appeal form sits behind the banned login, so the appeal starts from the account, not the phone.

What we file for a Grindr ban

  1. We read the notice and the record with you. We find the ground, check what Grindr says it kept, and note the date.
  2. We write the ban appeal text. The form can only be sent by the account holder, so we draft the words and the list of what to attach, and you press send.
  3. We file what a third party may file, in your name, under a signed authority, copying you the moment it goes: the access request for the enforcement record and device identifiers.
  4. We answer what comes back. The Case is $149: every route found, drafted and filed, and every reply answered for 60 days. The Advocate is $349 and covers up to four apps from the same company.

A device-level termination is Grindr’s to reverse; nothing we file changes a device identifier. Grindr is not a Match Group app, so there is no group escalation desk above it. We are not a law firm and do not give legal advice. We never ask for a password. The free check takes about two minutes.

Questions people actually ask

Does Grindr ban your phone?

For the most serious violations, yes. Grindr’s 2025 EU workbook says its enforcement includes “account termination at the device level for the most serious violations”. For other bans its Privacy Policy says it may retain a device identifier for “accounts or devices that have been banned”.

Does Grindr ban your IP address?

Nothing Grindr has published describes an IP ban. Its documents describe a device identifier, account information, flagged image reuse across accounts, behavioural and device-level scoring, and network-level bot detection. Those are separate from your IP address.

Can I use Grindr on a new phone after a ban?

Grindr’s Terms forbid circumventing the features that enforce limits on use, and its guidelines treat repeated offences as grounds for a permanent ban. A new phone carries a different identifier but does not change your account information, your photos or the original decision, so we do not advise it.

How does Grindr know it is the same person?

Grindr does not publish how it links accounts. It names the signals: account information, a device identifier, image reuse across accounts, behavioural scoring and sign-up checks. Any of them can connect a new profile to a banned one.

Does a Grindr device ban expire?

Grindr publishes no end date for a ban or for the record it keeps against a banned device. Its Privacy Policy says it “may retain” the identifier for banned accounts or devices, and separately keeps identifiers up to two years after a deletion.

Does uninstalling Grindr clear the ban?

No. The record is kept against the account and the device identifier, not the app on your screen. Grindr’s Privacy Policy says it retains them for banned accounts or devices, so a reinstall does not remove it.

How do I appeal a Grindr device ban?

Use the ban appeal form at web.grindr.com/ban-appeal. Grindr says all ban appeals must go through it and that an email will be redirected. A trained team member who was not part of the first decision reviews it, and Grindr may not share the full reason.

How long does a Grindr appeal take?

Grindr’s 2025 workbook gives a median of 281 hours across appeals, and 46 hours in the last quarter of 2025 after extra staffing. A median hides slow cases, 64,331 account-ban appeals were still open on 31 December 2025, and nobody can promise a timeline.
